The BPM Finder helps you find the tempo of a song, beat, loop, recording, or live rhythm in beats per minute. You can tap along manually, analyze a browser-supported audio file, or use your microphone to estimate BPM from a steady rhythmic source.

The tool also shows useful timing information such as milliseconds per beat, decimal BPM, and half-time and double-time alternatives. If you want to work with tempo after finding it, the main Tempo Calculator provides additional BPM-based calculations and timing tools.

How to Use the BPM Finder

Choose the detection method that best matches what you are working with.

Tap Tempo is the quickest option when you can hear the beat clearly. Tap the large button in time with the music, or use the Space or Enter key. After several consistent taps, the calculator estimates the BPM from the intervals between them.

Analyze Audio lets you select an audio file your browser can decode. The file is analyzed locally for recurring rhythmic activity, and the tool returns an estimated tempo.

Microphone mode listens to a rhythm through your device microphone after you grant permission. It can be useful when music is playing from another device or when you are performing a steady beat live.

How Tap Tempo Calculates BPM

Tap Tempo measures the amount of time between your taps.

The basic relationship is:

BPM = 60,000 ÷ average interval between taps in milliseconds

If the average interval is 500 milliseconds:

60,000 ÷ 500 = 120 BPM

The calculator uses multiple tap intervals rather than relying on only a single pair of taps. This helps reduce the effect of one early or late tap.

For a steadier result, tap along with at least several beats. Eight to sixteen taps usually gives the calculator more information than only two or three taps.

How Audio File BPM Detection Works

Automatic BPM detection is different from manual tapping.

Instead of waiting for mouse or keyboard input, the tool analyzes changes in the audio signal that may correspond to rhythmic onsets such as drum hits, transients, accents, or repeating energy patterns.

It then looks for recurring timing relationships and estimates the tempo that best fits those rhythmic patterns.

The result should be treated as an estimated BPM, not an infallible measurement.

Automatic detection tends to work best when the audio contains:

  • A steady pulse
  • Clear drums or percussion
  • Repeating rhythmic accents
  • Limited tempo variation
  • A reasonably strong rhythmic section

Results may be less stable with ambient music, rubato performances, very soft percussion, complex syncopation, tempo changes, or recordings where the beat is difficult to distinguish.

Using Microphone BPM Detection

Microphone mode provides another option when you do not have an audio file available.

After selecting Start Listening, the browser requests microphone permission. The tool then listens for a short period and analyzes rhythmic changes locally.

For better results:

  • Keep background noise low.
  • Place the microphone near the rhythmic source.
  • Use a section with clear percussion.
  • Avoid speaking over the music.
  • Let the rhythm play steadily during the analysis period.

A live drummer or musician may naturally vary timing slightly, so microphone results can fluctuate more than a perfectly quantized electronic beat.

The microphone is only activated after you explicitly start the feature, and the tool releases the microphone when listening stops or the calculator is reset.

Understanding Your BPM Result

The main result displays the estimated or calculated tempo in beats per minute.

For example:

120 BPM

means the selected beat occurs 120 times per minute.

The tool can also display a decimal estimate such as:

119.8 BPM

The rounded number is easier to use in many musical situations, while the decimal value can be useful when matching recordings that were not produced at an exact whole-number tempo.

Milliseconds per Beat

Once BPM is known, the duration of one beat can be calculated as:

Milliseconds per beat = 60,000 ÷ BPM

At 120 BPM:

60,000 ÷ 120 = 500 ms

At 100 BPM:

60,000 ÷ 100 = 600 ms

This value becomes useful when setting delay times, envelopes, modulation, or other tempo-related audio parameters.

Why Half-Time and Double-Time BPM Matter

One of the most common sources of confusion in BPM detection is half-time and double-time interpretation.

A track that feels like 140 BPM may sometimes be counted as 70 BPM, depending on which rhythmic level you treat as the main beat.

Likewise:

  • 60 BPM ↔ 120 BPM
  • 70 BPM ↔ 140 BPM
  • 80 BPM ↔ 160 BPM

Neither value is automatically meaningless. They represent related pulse levels.

That is why the BPM Finder displays half-time and double-time alternatives instead of hiding them.

If an automatic result says 70 BPM but you naturally count the song much faster, compare the 140 BPM double-time value. If the tool reports 160 BPM but the groove feels slower, the 80 BPM half-time value may better match the pulse you want.

BPM, Tempo, Beat, and Rhythm

These terms are related but describe different ideas.

BPM is a numeric measurement.

Tempo is the overall speed of the music.

Beat is the recurring pulse you count.

Rhythm describes patterns of durations and accents that occur around that pulse.

A song can maintain the same BPM while using very different rhythms. Likewise, two musicians may describe the same groove at half-time or double-time depending on how they count it.

Accuracy and Limitations

Tap Tempo is heavily influenced by how consistently you tap. A stability indicator can help identify when your intervals are becoming more consistent, but it should not be interpreted as a certified accuracy percentage.

Automatic audio and microphone modes are estimates.

Potential sources of ambiguity include:

  • Half-time and double-time rhythms
  • Swing
  • Syncopation
  • Tempo automation
  • Live timing variation
  • Weak transients
  • Polyrhythms
  • Long intros without percussion
  • Sudden tempo changes

A song can also intentionally change tempo, meaning one single BPM value may not describe the entire recording.

For difficult material, compare automatic analysis with manual tapping and choose the pulse that makes the most musical sense.

Privacy and Browser Processing

Tap calculations happen directly in your browser.

Audio-file analysis is also performed locally by the tool and does not require sending the selected recording to a remote analysis service.

Microphone mode requires browser permission and only activates when you start listening. The microphone stream is stopped when analysis ends or you reset the tool.

Recent results may be saved temporarily in browser session storage so you can compare BPM readings during the same session. Use Clear History whenever you want to remove them.

Is BPM the same as tempo?

Why can automatic BPM detection be wrong?

Can I use the result in my DAW?

Yes. Once you determine the BPM, you can enter that tempo into your DAW and use it for grids, click tracks, rhythmic effects, note timing, and other tempo-synced functions.
