12/8 Time Signature: How to Count It, With Examples

How do you count 12/8 time?

Count four beats, each split into three eighth notes: “1 la li, 2 la li, 3 la li, 4 la li”. The top 12 counts eighth notes; the felt beat is the dotted quarter, and four of them fill the bar.

The accent shape matches 4/4 (strong, weak, medium, weak), but every beat carries three pulses instead of two. That makes 12/8 compound quadruple meter. A bar of 12/8 equals two bars of 6/8 time joined together.

12/8 vs 4/4 with triplets

A bar of 12/8 sounds the same as a bar of 4/4 filled with eighth-note triplets. Both have four beats divided into three. The difference is notation: 12/8 writes plain eighth notes, while 4/4 needs a triplet bracket over every group.

Blues, shuffle and soul ballads in 12/8

12/8 is the usual notation for slow blues, doo-wop, soul ballads and gospel. The piano or guitar plays all twelve eighth notes as a rolling triplet pattern while the drums mark the four beats, with the backbeat on 2 and 4.

R.E.M.’s “Everybody Hurts”, from the 1992 album Automatic for the People, is a widely cited later rock example: its arpeggiated guitar plays every eighth note of the 12/8 bar. A shuffle groove in blues and rock is the same long–short triplet feel, often written in 4/4 with a “swing” or “shuffle” instruction instead of in 12/8.

How long is a 12/8 bar?

A 12/8 bar lasts twelve eighth notes, which equals six quarter notes: 360,000 ÷ BPM milliseconds. Because slow 12/8 grooves feel four long beats per bar, the bars are longer than they sound.

How to practice 12/8 with a metronome

Set the metronome to four beats with triplet clicks at the felt-beat tempo. This produces the exact 12/8 grid with the four main beats clearly marked.

1. Choose the felt tempo, for example 60 dotted-quarter beats per minute.
2. Enter 60 BPM, 4 beats per bar, quarter-note unit and Triplets for clicks per beat.
3. Count “1 la li, 2 la li, 3 la li, 4 la li” and clap the backbeat on 2 and 4.
4. Switch clicks per beat to Beat only and keep the triplets going on your own.
