How to Use the Audio Speed Calculator

The calculator has two calculation modes.

In Calculate New Duration mode:

  1. Enter the original hours, minutes, and seconds.
  2. Choose a playback speed or enter a custom rate.
  3. Read the adjusted playback duration.
  4. Check how much time is saved or added.

For example, if an audio recording is 1 hour 30 minutes long and you play it at 1.5×, the new playback time is:

How Playback Speed Is Calculated

Playback speed works as a multiplier.

Normal playback is:

Faster playback uses a value greater than 1:

  • 1.25×
  • 1.5×
  • 1.75×

Slower playback uses a value below 1:

  • 0.75×
  • 0.5×

The basic calculation is:

Adjusted Duration = Original Duration ÷ Playback Speed

Suppose a podcast is 90 minutes long.

At 1.5× speed:

90 ÷ 1.5 = 60 minutes

At 2×:

90 ÷ 2 = 45 minutes

At 0.75×:

90 ÷ 0.75 = 120 minutes

Because playback duration and playback speed have an inverse relationship, increasing the speed decreases the time required.

How to Calculate Time Saved

Time saved is the difference between the original duration and adjusted playback duration.

Time Saved = Original Duration − Adjusted Duration

For a 120-minute audiobook at 1.5×:

Adjusted duration = 120 ÷ 1.5 = 80 minutes

Therefore:

Time saved = 120 − 80 = 40 minutes

At speeds below 1×, playback becomes longer instead. The calculator labels this as time added rather than time saved.

This distinction makes it easier to compare listening options without manually calculating each speed.

Finding the Speed Needed for a Target Duration

Sometimes the question is not “How long will this take at 1.5×?” but instead:

“How fast do I need to play this to finish in 45 minutes?”

The required playback speed can be calculated with:

Required Speed = Original Duration ÷ Target Duration

For example:

Original recording: 90 minutes

Available time: 60 minutes

90 ÷ 60 = 1.5×

So a playback rate of 1.5× is required.

This mode is useful when planning study sessions, podcast listening, meeting reviews, recorded lessons, or editing workflows.

Audio Speed vs Tempo

Playback speed and musical tempo are related concepts, but they are not identical.

Playback speed describes how quickly an entire recording is reproduced relative to its original rate.

Tempo usually describes the musical pulse measured in beats per minute.

For example, changing a media player’s speed from 1× to 1.5× shortens the entire playback duration. A BPM-based workflow instead focuses on the spacing between musical beats and rhythmic subdivisions.

Does Changing Audio Speed Change Pitch?

Changing playback speed and changing pitch should not automatically be treated as the same operation.

Many modern media players and audio applications use processing that can alter playback speed while attempting to preserve the perceived pitch. Other methods of changing playback rate may affect pitch as well.

Because this calculator does not process an audio file, it does not predict pitch changes.

The calculated duration assumes that the selected playback speed remains constant from beginning to end.

Actual playback time can differ when:

  • Sections are skipped.
  • Playback speed changes during listening.
  • Silence-removal features are enabled.
  • The media platform imposes its own playback restrictions.
  • The displayed source duration has been rounded.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does 1.5× playback speed mean?

It means the media is played at one and a half times its normal rate. A 60-minute recording therefore takes 40 minutes at a constant 1.5× playback speed.

How long is one hour at 2× speed?

One hour becomes 30 minutes because 60 ÷ 2 = 30.

How long is two hours at 1.5× speed?

Two hours is 120 minutes. At 1.5×, 120 ÷ 1.5 = 80 minutes, or 1 hour 20 minutes.

How much time does 1.25× speed save?

A 60-minute recording takes 48 minutes at 1.25×, saving 12 minutes.

How much time does 2× speed save?
